If you are looking for low-cost dental health plans, you probably have read articles full of helpful tips like this:
- “Save up $100 each month to pay for dental services. If you don’t need root canals or other expensive services, you can spend the money on something fun!”
- “Go to dental schools and have students practice their skills on your teeth!”
- “Do you need a tooth extraction? Save money by using the string and door method!”
To be fair, we only found two of the three suggestions online. However, all of them are problematic. After all, if you are facing a dental emergency and need immediate treatment, you don’t have time to put money aside for your required dental procedures.
And while dental students certainly need practice with actual patients, you may not be too excited to be their guinea pigs – especially if you are already anxious to have dental work done.
Instead, if you are without dental insurance or are looking for affordable dental care from a licensed dentist, consider purchasing a dental discount plan. A dental discount plan is not dental insurance or health insurance. Instead, it is a way to reduce dental costs by obtaining membership in a discount club.
How to Get Affordable Dental Care Without Dental Insurance
Are you not eligible to receive help at free or low-cost dental clinics or dental charities? That doesn’t mean that you need to go without necessary dental treatments. Here’s how to enroll in dental plans to help maintain healthy teeth and get the dental treatment you need.
Step 1: Research dental discount plans.
Unlike a dental insurance plan, you typically have no waiting period when purchasing dental health plans. You can immediately save on your dental bills as soon as you enroll.
Step 2: Choose from the list of participating dentists and make an appointment.
Make an appointment with a participating dentist to receive a reduced-cost dental exam or dental cleaning. (Many dental insurance plans also require you to select a specific list of dentists in your area.)
When you make your appointment, tell them you will be paying your dental bill immediately following the service and will use a dental savings plan.
Step 3: Receive quality dental care.
When you arrive for your appointment, you will receive professional medical advice from a trained dentist. Dental visits may include the following services:
- Oral Exams
- Teeth Cleaning
- Fillings and Crowns
- Orthodontics (braces)
- Cosmetic Dentistry
Step 4: Enjoy your savings.
Depending on your plan, members can save 20% – 65% on all restorative and cosmetic work (fillings, crowns, braces, etc.) and up to 80% on preventative work (teeth cleaning, x-rays, etc.) performed by a general dentist. In addition, specialist fees are discounted by up to 25%.
